DRM Support

What is DRM?

DRM, or Digital Rights Management, is a system of controlling who can read an eBook.

Publish Green doesn't apply our own version of DRM to the eBooks we create, but the resellers that we work with do.

DRM in a Nutshell

DRM imposes three serious limitations:

  1. The eBook must be created with a specific DRM scheme in mind. Once an eBook has been "wrapped" in a specific DRM scheme, it's effectively "locked" to the brand of devices particular to that scheme.
  2. Depending on the brand of eReader you own, your eBooks must generally be purchased from a specific retailer. This means that it's not possible to, for example, purchase a DRM-enabled eBook from a third-party website and read it on your Kindle. In other words, DRM requires that you purchase your Kindle eBooks from Amazon and your iPad eBooks from the iBookstore.
  3. DRM-enabled eBooks may only be read on devices which support that particular DRM-scheme. This means that it's impossible to transfer a DRM-enabled EPUB from your iPad to your Nook, even though both devices support reading EPUB eBooks.

We understand that this may seem needlessly complex and limiting. The current state of DRM as it relates to eBooks is in its infancy, and this is clearly not a solved problem.

Publish Green's DRM Support

Publish Green is DRM neutral. Because "wrapping" an eBook in DRM takes place after the book is formatted and submitted to various retailers, all of our eBooks are created without DRM. This means sites like Amazon and iBookstore may or may not wrap your eBook in DRM, at their discretion.

Unfortunately, we have no control over the various DRM policies put in place by our resellers.
