eBook Editing

eBook Editing Services

You have undoubtedly logged long hours going through your manuscript with a fine-tooth comb, doing the old read, write, delete, re-write, re-read, delete, and place-head-to-desk dance. Then, after carefully reviewing the spelling and grammar and fact-checking the document, you may even have had friends, family, or members of your writing group read your work. We applaud your ability to brave all that criticism, but at the end of the day none of this is equal to a professional edit.

Please note that for eBook editing services, you must submit your manuscript to us in a Word document (.doc or .docx) format.

Basic Copyedit

Basic Copyedit (One round of editing = 2¢ per word)

Our editors will:

  • Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax
  • Correct errors in sentence structure and language usage
  • Insert notifications throughout the document where approval from a third-party may be required
  • Correct errors in commonly known facts (e.g. changing “Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of Defense from New Jersey” to “Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State”)

Our editors for this package will not:

  • Restructure sentences
  • Alter word choices, except in the case of errors
  • Offer developmental suggestions
  • Edit your revisions in response to this initial edit. Any errors incorporated into the manuscript after you have approved the editor’s revisions will remain in the finished manuscript.
  • Proofread the formatted eBook for any remaining errors or inconsistencies
  • Secure any necessary permissions for reproduced material including, but not limited to: song lyrics, photos, poems, newspaper articles, or text. Any such material exceeding 10 percent of the original source’s word count exceeds fair use, and it is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the original source’s publisher.

How the Basic Copyedit process works:

  • The editor will have the manuscript copyedited within 20 business days from the date that you upload the manuscript to the Hillcrest Author Center. The edited manuscript will be uploaded in a format in which you can see the edits/deletions, and you will have the choice to either accept or reject them. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.

Comprehensive Edit

Comprehensive Edit (Two rounds of editing = 3.5¢ per word)

Our editors will:

Round 1
  • Copyedit the manuscript as outlined in the Basic Copyedit service
  • Offer developmental feedback designed to improve the clarity, arc, and soundness of your book’s thesis (in the case of nonfiction); or the characterization, dialogue, and plot development of the manuscript (in the case of fiction)
  • Highlight text that is erroneous, repetitive, or extraneous
  • Conduct a 30-minute telephone consultation with you following the first edit to answer any questions or concerns you may have regarding the editorial feedback. You can choose to schedule this call before beginning the revision process, or wait until after you’ve completed the second draft (but before uploading for the second round of editing).
Round 2
  • Eliminate any remaining typographical errors or inconsistencies in the revised manuscript

Our editors for this package will not:

  • Fact-check the manuscript.
  • Edit your revisions in response to the second edit. Any errors incorporated into the manuscript after you have approved the editor’s revisions will remain in the final manuscript.
  • Secure permissions for previously published material, including but not limited to song lyrics, photos, illustrations, poems, newspaper articles, and text. It is the author’s responsibility to secure permission from the copyright holder.

How the Comprehensive Edit process works:

  • The editor will have the first round of editing completed within 20 business days (about four weeks) from when you upload the manuscript to the Author Center. In cases where the manuscript exceeds 100,000 words, additional editing time may be required.
  • Once you download the edited manuscript, you will indicate your preferred date and time for a telephone consultation. This 30-minute call between you and your editor can be used to discuss any questions or concerns you have regarding the editor’s feedback, or to outline your plans for revision.
  • Once you have made your revisions, you will upload the revised manuscript to the Author Center. Your editor will have the edited, revised manuscript uploaded to the Author Center within 10 business days (two weeks).
  • All edits will be made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature, giving you the option to accept or reject each change. You can also read more about using Track Changes.
